Alişan Burak Yaşar, MD, is an associate professor of psychiatry and a psychotherapist. He graduated from Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey, in 2013, having spent part of his undergraduate training at the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Italy, as an Erasmus student in 2010. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Health Sciences, Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, in 2018. He then worked as a psychiatrist at Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital (2018-2020) and as a faculty member at Istanbul Gelişim University (2020-2025). He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Mental Health and Diseases, Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul Nişantaşı University, and maintains a private practice on Bağdat Avenue, Suadiye, Istanbul. He has also taught as a visiting faculty member at Haliç University, Istanbul Okan University and Istanbul Bilgi University.

Psychotherapy training. EMDR: certified therapist since 2016, subsequently trainer and facilitator, with advanced training in EMDR for OCD (Derek Farrell), EMDR for psychosis (Paul Miller) and EMDR for addiction, the DeTUR protocol (A. J. Popky). Cognitive behavioural therapy: 168 hours with the Psychiatric Association of Turkey and 80 hours with Hakan Türkçapar. Supportive psychotherapy with Cem Kaptanoğlu. Psychodynamic psychotherapy with Doğan Şahin, including 68 hours of group supervision with Mine Özmen. Certified schema therapist (international ISST programme). Acceptance and commitment therapy; trauma and disaster psychiatry; solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing and hypnosis.

Clinical and research interests. EMDR (standard protocols, the Flash technique, EMDR 2.0 and group protocols), psychological trauma and related disorders, complex trauma, traumatic grief, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, depression, CBT and bibliotherapy, schema therapy, psychopharmacology, ADHD, evolutionary psychiatry, disaster psychiatry, and digital psychotherapy interventions.

Memberships and professional roles. Psychiatric Association of Turkey — Coordinator of the EMDR Study Unit, Coordinator of the Disaster and Psychological Trauma Unit, former Coordinator of the Resident Physicians Commission and former member of the Istanbul Branch Executive Board (2016-2018). EMDR Association of Turkey — Education Coordinator, former board member. Association for Trauma and Disaster Mental Health Studies — board member. Society for the Promotion of Community Mental Health — board member. Association of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapies. World Psychiatric Association. Turkish Medical Association. Founding president of the Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine Alumni Association (2013).

Projects and international work. Trainer and supervisor in the World Health Organization's mhGAP programme (2016-2018), delivering training to health professionals working with Syrian refugees. Trainer in the SIHHAT Project (European Union and the Turkish Ministry of Health) and in the UNICEF and Ministry of Family psychosocial support programme for disasters and emergencies. Principal investigator of a TÜBİTAK 1002 project. Training and supervision for the Turkish Red Crescent. Co-coordinator, with Önder Kavakçı, of the nine-month programme “Advanced Therapy Skills in Complex Trauma” at the Academy of Therapy Sciences (first cohort September 2024). He has contributed a chapter to the Psychiatric Association of Turkey's guide for young psychiatrists, and serves on the editorial board of the Turkish Journal of Traumatic Stress.
