Background and Aims

The large-scale invasion of Ukraine has entered its third year.

Effective and efficient trauma reduction techniques are needed for those living and working in the country.

EMDR and the group and early intervention techniques derived from it have shown benefits in reducing posttraumatic stress symptoms during ongoing traumatic events.

The aim of this study is to understand the impact of the EMDR-IGTP-OTS-R protocol on trauma symptomatology, subjective well-being, and resilience in mental health professionals living and working in Ukraine during the large-scale invasion.

Methods

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted with three assessment points (pretest, posttest, follow-up) for both the treatment and control groups. The researchers used the PCL-5, WHO-5, SWLS, BRS, and WORCS assessments to measure the research constructs of trauma symptomatology, resilience, and well-being. Friedman tests and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to understand the impact of the EMDR-IGTP-OTS-R protocol in a treatment group and to determine how these results compared with those of a control group.

Results

-Significant reduction in posttraumatic stress scores, x}(2) = 9.449, p = 009.

- No statistically significant change was observed in well-being scores.

- No statistically significant change was observed in resilience scores.

Conclusions

Given the number of individuals currently affected by war, these results indicate that the EMDR-IGTP-OTS-R protocol is a beneficial treatment for reducing PTSD symptomatology in people living and working in ongoing crisis situations. It reaches a larger number of people within a relatively short period, making it both effective and efficient.

Conclusions

With the number of individuals who are currently impacted by war, these results show EMDR-IGTP-OTS-R protocol is a beneficial treatment for the reduction of PTSD symptomology in those who are living and working in ongoing crisis situations. It encompasses a larger number of people with a relatively short period of time to be both effective and efficient.
