Natural disasters have serious effects on the mental health of those affected. Research shows that, when adults and children are exposed to trauma, childhood trauma has a greater negative impact later in life than trauma experienced in adulthood. Therefore, because children's mental and emotional functioning is not yet fully developed, they need psychological support until they overcome the painful experiences of the disaster (Okuyama, 1999; Pynoos&Nader, 1990; Van der Kolk, 2003).

When children experience a traumatic event, they may feel intense sadness, intense anger, and intense fear that it will happen again (Bulut, S. 2010; Altun, F. 2016, Akcanbaş M. 2009).

This study presents the EMDR treatment provided to 100 child and adolescent clients who experienced an earthquake, along with its outcomes, based on the hypothesis that EMDR would reduce the effects of PTSD and improve functioning in children and adolescents following an earthquake.

Methodology

Following the February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake, the study included 100 child & adolescent patients who were in the earthquake zone and receiving follow-up care, who volunteered to continue EMDR sessions, who, along with their families, agreed to participate in the study, and who adhered to the sessions through completion (n=61, ages 2-18). Participants' scores on the Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale-8 (CRIES-8) and the Fide Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children were recorded before and after their EMDR sessions. Patients received 5-8 sessions of child and adolescent EMDR, each lasting 45-90 minutes.

Results and Discussion

After treatment, trauma scores in the EMDR group were significantly lower than those in the waiting-list group. Depression scores decreased significantly, and levels of well-being increased. The results suggest that the interventions may reduce PTSD and depressive symptoms and improve the well-being of children with PTSD. In addition, the content of EMDR appears to help children integrate the entire experience and reconstruct an adaptive meaning for the traumatic event.

The results of this study indicate that EMDR treatment may both reduce PTSD and improve adjustment to daily routines in children and adolescents.

First hypothesis: EMDR treatment with children and adolescents following the earthquake was found to significantly reduce post-traumatic symptoms.

Second hypothesis: Participants were observed to adapt more quickly to their daily routines after EMDR treatment.

Third hypothesis: A series of 5-8 structured EMDR sessions delivered at short intervals following the earthquake was found to be significantly effective in reducing post-traumatic symptoms.

Natural disasters have serious effects on the mental health of victims. Studies reveal that if adults and children are exposed to trauma, the future negative impact of childhood traumas is greater than adult traumas. Therefore, since children’s mental and emotional functions are not yet fully developed, they need to be supported with psychological help until they overcome the painful experiences of the disaster (Okuyama, 1999; Pynoos&Nader, 1990; Van der Kolk, 2003).

When children encounter a traumatic event, they may feel intense sadness, intense anger, and intense fear that it will recur (Bulut, S. 2010; Altun, F. 2016, Akcanbaş M. 2009).

In this study, we present the EMDR applied to 100 children and adolescent clients with earthquake experience and its results, assuming that EMDR will reduce the effects of PTSD and positively affect its functionality in children and adolescents after earthquake.

Methodology

After the 6 Febuary 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake, 100 Children & Adolescent patients who were in the earthquake zone and were being followed up, who volunteered to continue EMDR sessions, who were approved by themselves and their families to participate in the study, and who complied with the sessions until the endr were included in the study (n=61, 2-18 years old). The scores of the Children’s Impact of Events Scale-8 (Cries-8) and the Trauma Symptom List for Fide Children were recorded before and after the EMDR sessions of the patients participationg in the study. 5-8 sessions of Child&Adolescent EMDR for 45-90 minutes were applied to the patients.

Results and Discussion

After the treatment, EMDR group had significantly lower trauma scores compared to the waiting-list. Depression scores significantly diminished and well-being levels increased. Results suggest that interventions may reduce PTSD and depression symptoms, as well as improving the well-being of children with PTSD. It also appears that the content of the EMDR helps children to integrate the whole experience, reconstructing an adaptive meaning for the traumatic event.

The results of this study show that both decrease in PTSD and compliance with vital routines can be seen in children and adolescents with EMDR application.

First hypothesis: It was found that working with children and adolescents with EMDR after the earthquake significantly reduces post-traumatic symptoms.

Second hypothesis: It has been observed that they adapt to their daily routines more quickly after working with EMDR.

Third hypothesis: It was determined that 5-8 consecutive structured EMDR sessions performed at short intervals after the earthquake were significantly effective in reducing post-traumatic symptoms.
